Thistle and Bannock, finding out about Finland.
We have been reading through the wonderful books that Mr Ikonen sent us from Finland. The children have really enjoyed finding out about Santa Claus, and Tatu and Patu's adventures in Finland have been eagerly digested. Thank you very much for these beautiful books!

We had our Christmas party this afternoon, organised by the oldest class in the school, for the oldest four classes. Children were encouraged to come dressed as movie stars, and we imagined that the hall was part of Hollywood! It was a very enjoyable afternoon and everyone had a lot of fun. The children thought it was a great way to end the school term before Christmas.

Each child had to wear a label, showing the name of the movie star they were. Here, Dekker is seen in his Darth Vader costume, with some of the other movie stars.

The children didn't dance all afternoon. It was nice to take a break and watch the others dancing too. Oatcake, Stovies, Crofter and Bannock take time out.

Some of our girls came up onto the stage, where the DJ was playing the music. There, they danced for the rest of the children from the four oldest classes.

Some of the teachers showed the children how to dance to the song called "Superman."
Mr Purves was also dressed up as a cool Hollywood actor!

The refreshments area was part of the VIP room. It was a good chance to cool off, after the dancing in the main hall.

Our oldest class organised the party, and each class had time in the refreshments area, which was styled on Moe's Bar from The Simpsons. Here, some of our class receive their fruit juices, from "Moe".

The teachers all had their lunch after the children had been served. Dorothy, our Headteacher, is furthest away from the camera, with the orange hat. Mr Purves and Mrs Edwards are third and fourth from the left.

The menu for Christmas lunch was Lentil soup, or Melon to start with, followed by Turkey with Potatoes and Roast Potatoes, Carrots and Peas. For dessert, there was Ice Cream and Jelly with Fruit Salad.
Everyone agreed that it was the best school Christmas lunch we had ever had.

In our cloakroom, we have paintings of Lily of the Valley flowers, which we produced as part of the whole school's theme of artwork based on International Education.

Every Wednesday library bus arrives to our school. It is a big bus and it is full of books, magazines and CDs. You can borrow what you want and it`s free. If there isn`t the book you want to borrow Jorma will order and you will get it next time the bus comes. This is a very good service for us. We have little library at our school and the library of Varkaus is about 8 km from our school. There is internet connection and PC too in the library bus. We don`t know if you have any library buses in Scotland.

We skated on 5th of December. The ice was really good, but in recent days it has been so warm we can`t skate. We have to wait until it is colder. Here Pikku -Ukkeli skates very fast and he stops rapidly.

Here are some photos of our independence celebration.
The pupils in the first and second grade asked riddles. They took the first letter of the anwers and then they had two words: ITSENÄINEN SUOMI. In English it is Independent Finland.

From right to left: Headmaster Jari Toroi and municipal councillor Martti Ikonen. The main speech by Martti Ikonen. Superintendent of schools Sinikka Häyrinen was sitting next to Mr Ikonen.
Here are women of our school and headmaster Mr Toroi , of course. The national costumes are really colorful.
